A Mother's Quiet Strength, A Daughter's Sacrifice, A Baby's Future
The Story:For more than ten years, this family has called a tiny, windowless room in an Addis Ababa slum their home. Less than 10 square meters. No electricity. No running water. Only a narrow passageway and one bed shared by four people.
One year ago, the father answered the call to serve his country. He kissed his three-month-old son Hiwot goodbye and left for the front lines. Since that day, there has been only silence. The family still does not know if he is alive, captured, or lost.
The mother, Lomi Nigussie, has carried this weight alone. Years of hard labor have left her body broken. Her heart and stomach are failing, yet she cannot afford to see a doctor. Some days she is too weak to even sit up in bed.
The Struggle:Twelve-year-old Soliyana goes to school, but the moment classes end, her real work begins. She feeds baby Hiwot, helps her mother turn over in bed, washes what little they have, and tries to keep the small room clean. Baby Hiwot has never known his father's face or voice. Every night the family lies on one bed in the cramped space, wondering if tomorrow will bring news or relief.
